Urban systems

Urban systems represent the largest concentration of population, goods and infrastructure vulnerable to climate change, but also the main sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, contributing to climate change. Cities can be vulnerable to extreme weather events, especially floods, heat/cold waves, extreme storms, heavy snowfalls that significantly affect the urban environment, the quality of life and the provision of essential services for the population such as transport, water supply and energy, health or social services. Climate scenarios indicate that cities in Romania will face a high exposure to several types of extreme weather events related to temperature (heat and cold waves) and/or precipitation (floods and droughts) that may have negative effects on the health of the vulnerable population and generates economic losses to sectors and infrastructure, disrupting the proper functioning of the urban system.
